How it works
This custom map interface allows you to locate Wilderness areas in the Sierra Nevada by through a pan tool, or by choosing a place from a jump to menu. Once in the desired location you can get more information from the map by using the ID button, as well as turn layers on and off.

To pan the map, click and hold down your left hand mouse button while dragging either of maps in the direction you are interested in travelling. You can also double click on the Reference Map, and the Main Map. You can also select a general location to 'jump' the map to out of the pull-down menu on the right side of the page.

In the lower right portion of the module page, you will see a Legend. This area not only describes the symbols you are seeing on the map, but also allows you to turn layers on and off for more or less information on the map.

Please note that using the , as described in the Navigation section will provide you with additional information from the map.

Navigation
There are six buttons located under the 'Trip Planning Navigation' header in the Trip Planning Module. These buttons can also be found throughout the supporting pages and will provide the same functionality.

ID Button: Once activated, this button will return any information from the map layers based on where you click. To use; (1) Click once on the button (you will not see anything happen). (2) Click anywhere on the map. A dialog box will appear and give you information about where you have clicked.

Help Page: This button brings you to this page.

Overview Page: This button will take you to the home page, where you entered this module from.

Print Button: Use this button to print the map, with all currently displayed layers. You will be presented with a dialog box once clicked. Click the 'OK' button, then follow the Printer Dialog windows that appear.

Regulations Page: While most all of the regulations pertaining to the Wilderness areas in question are represented graphically, this page will contain a textual description of these regulations as well.

Trailhead Directory: This button will take you to the Trailhead Directory page which lists all of the trailheads within each region presented in the Overview Map.

Background
The Interactive Map module is a combination of Java based scripts and data from Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data. This data is combined and drawn on the map as 'thematic layers'. Advanced scripting creates the interactive functionality of the map, such as the ability to pan, turn layers on and off, and get information from underlying layers.

Glossary
ID Button: See in the Navigation section above.

Layers: Each of the different themes that is presented in the map, as described by the symbols in the Legend, are considered a 'layer'. Some layers are interactive, allowing the user to turn them on and off.

Main Map: This is the large map in the middle of the Interactive Trip Planning Module.

Pan: The act of moving the map in a desired direction through click-and-drag functionality.

Reference Map: This is the small locator map in the top right portion of the Interactive Trip Planning Module.
